Abu Dhabi Mangrove Blue Carbon

This project restores and protects 3,200 hectares of mangrove habitat along Abu Dhabi's western coastline, one of the largest mangrove restoration initiatives in the Arabian Gulf. Mangroves sequester carbon at rates 3-5x higher than terrestrial forests, with most carbon stored in anoxic sediments where it can persist for millennia. The project has planted 4.5 million mangrove seedlings of the native Avicennia marina species since 2020, with survival rates exceeding 78%.

The restored mangroves also provide critical nursery habitat for commercially important fish and shrimp species, supporting local fishing communities. The project is developed in partnership with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) and has received COP28 recognition.
