Pacific Northwest Extended Rotation
by Finite Carbon · Oregon, United States
About this project
Finite Carbon's Pacific Northwest IFM project extends harvest rotation cycles on 28,000 hectares of managed Douglas fir and western hemlock timberland in Oregon's Cascade Range. By extending the rotation from the commercial standard of 40 years to 80 years, the standing forest accumulates 2-3x more carbon while still being sustainably harvested at maturity. The longer rotation also allows trees to reach larger diameters, producing higher-value timber products that store carbon for decades in long-lived wood products.
The project area provides habitat for Northern Spotted Owl and protects headwater streams critical for salmon spawning.
