Kalimantan Peatland Conservation

The Kalimantan Peatland Conservation project protects 157,000 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan from conversion to palm oil plantations. The area was zoned for industrial agriculture prior to project intervention. Peatland forests store up to 20x more carbon per hectare than mineral soil forests, making their protection one of the most cost-effective climate interventions available.

The project employs 85 community rangers from 12 surrounding villages, funds primary school construction, and provides alternative livelihood training in sustainable agriculture and aquaculture. Fire detection systems using satellite monitoring and ground patrols have reduced fire incidents by 90% compared to surrounding unprotected areas.
