Guyana REDD+ National Programme
by Architecture for REDD+ Transactions (ART) · National (Guyana)
About this project
Guyana's national REDD+ programme is one of the most significant developments in carbon markets. The country maintains 85% forest cover — one of the highest rates globally — despite having legal rights to convert forest for economic development. Using the ART-TREES standard (The REDD+ Environmental Excellence Standard), Guyana issues jurisdictional credits that represent verified emissions reductions at the national level, eliminating the leakage and double-counting risks inherent in project-level REDD+.
These credits are CORSIA-eligible, meaning airlines can use them for compliance under the International Civil Aviation Organisation's carbon offsetting scheme. Guyana has partnered with Hess Corporation in a landmark sovereign-level carbon credit purchase agreement.
