Great Southern Forest Restoration

The Great Southern Forest Restoration project restores native woodland across 2,400 hectares of degraded agricultural land in Victoria's Western District. Working with Traditional Owner groups, the project uses locally-sourced seed from over 40 native tree and shrub species adapted to projected 2050 climate conditions. The methodology follows VM0047 (Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation), with monitoring plots established on a 200m grid.

Carbon sequestration is validated through annual biomass measurements and periodic soil carbon sampling. The project also supports habitat connectivity between fragmented remnant vegetation patches, creating wildlife corridors for threatened species including the Eastern Barred Bandicoot and Southern Brown Bandicoot.
