Kimberley Savanna Carbon Project

The Kimberley Savanna Carbon Project is managed by Aboriginal ranger groups across 1.2 million hectares of tropical savanna in Western Australia's Kimberley region. Using traditional burning practices refined over 65,000 years, rangers conduct early dry season burns that reduce the frequency and intensity of late-season wildfires. This shift in fire regime reduces methane and nitrous oxide emissions by up to 40% compared to unmanaged wildfire.

The project directly employs 45 Aboriginal rangers full-time and supports cultural knowledge transfer across generations. It is one of the highest-rated co-benefit projects globally, with verified contributions to biodiversity protection, community employment, and Indigenous self-determination.
